Gully Boy, an Indian Musical Dram in the Hindi Language, features stars such as Alia Bhatt, Kalki Koechlin, Vijay Raaz, Siddhant Chaturvedi, and Ranveer Singh. The film inspiration comes from the lives of Street rappers and showcases the coming of age storyline. It has won several awards including Filmfare awards and Best international feature film.
Gully Boy follows the story of a final year college student living in Mumbai’s Dharavi Slums – Murad Ahmed. He lives a troubled life with his abusive father who is always bringing much younger second wife to the disgust of the entire family. Murad, on the other hand, has a fascination for music. He also has a longtime and possessive girlfriend Firdausi(Bhatt Alia) who is training to become a surgeon. Both these characters keep their relationship a secret.
During the movie, Murad’s father is injured and he is forced to work as a chauffeur. He also begins writing lyrics borrowed heavily from the inequalities he sees while driving the limousine. He subsequently gets acquainted with a rapper Bhosle ‘MC Sher’ Shrikant played by Siddhant Chaturvedi. The local rapper saw him performing in a college festival and was attracted by his performance done at rap battles and underground shows and finally uploading them on YouTube.
Both Muran and Sher get an invite from a student Shweta ‘Sky’ Mehta (played by Kalki Koechlin) a student from Berklee college, to collaborate with her for a new song. The music video, shot in Dharavi, became popular.
Muran and Sky also share an intimate moment but when Safeena finds out she becomes violent towards Sky. Murad also decides to move with his brother and mother to work full time for Uncle Khan Ateeq played by Vijay Maurya.
Later on, Sky expresses her romantic feelings to Muran but he declines her intentions as he is still in love with Safeena whom she reconciles with. Sher and Muran open for Nas during his Mumbai concert after winning a music contest. Murad’s overall confidence grows as he continues to interact with his rap fans who appreciate the performances. He finally decides to stand up against Ateeq and Aftab when they try to belittle music passion. In the end, Muran wins the music contest and ends up being one of India’s best rappers. The movie ends with family and friends watching him perform.
